Metrolink Rail-with-Trail Design Guidelines

Guidelines for consistent design, construction, and maintenance on the commuter and freight railroad right-of-ways for Southern California. These were developed by Southern California Regional Railroad Authority staff in 2004 and set standards while allowing for flexibility in implementation if the intent of the guidelines are met.

Completed in December 2008 by Vanasse Hangen Brustlin, Inc., this study examines alternatives for a rail-with-trail within and along the Lowell Line MBTA right-of-way in Somerville, Massachusetts, between Ball Square and Mystic Valley Parkway. The trail concept is supported by Friends of the Community Path.

California Rails-with-Trails: A Survey of Trails Along Active Rail Lines

This 2009 report explores 21 rail-with-trail projects in California with a survey of trail managers and information gleaned from other reports. As rail-with-trail mileage has grown rapidly, the report gives trail advocates examples of the variety and benefits that rail-with-trails projects can provide. Sections focus on the growth of rails-with-trails, benefits, safety, liability, adjacent railroad characteristics, and design issues.

Rails-with-Trails: Design, Management and Operating Characteristics of 61 Trails Along Active Rail Lines

This report follows two previous reports on rails-with-trails by Rails-to-Trails Conservancy. The first was published in March, 1996 and the second in September, 1997.

The information in this report covers many aspects of rails-with-trails, including the extent and growth of rails-with-trails nationwide, safety performance, liability, trail design and location issues, attitudes of railway companies, obtaining easements for trails and funding.

The report is based on an extensive survey of managers of 61 rails-with-trails along with interviews and literature research. The authors had little direct contact with members of the railroad industry.
